On a sunny day in the month of March, when people were wiping their brows off the mid-month sweat, Cambrionics Life science  supported by the Department if Genetic engineering of SRM University conducted Rare Disease Day 2017 on 17 March 2017.

Rare Disease day observed usually at the end of February was initially organised by a unions of doctors and scientists in different countries in an effort to spread awareness and shed light on various rare genetic disorders afflicting several people globally.

The day begin with the lighting of the lamp by Dr Vairamani, Dean of Bioengineering. Several prominent speakers which saw the likes of Dr Priya Kannan, leading embryologist in the country, Dr Kalpana Gowrishanker, leading cyto-geneticist and genetic counselor, and Dr Duraisamy, Director Rare disease India Foundation spoke on rare diseases and the requirement of treatment, prenatal diagnosis and the importance of Genetic Screening.

A special part of the day was the welcoming of special children and their families, affected by rare diseases and students from the genetics department actively engaging with them, providing a day of fun and happiness.

Apart from the seminars and speeches, several activities were held such music and jamming sessions, flash mob and a poster presentation competition.

The day was held with an effort to create a moment of happiness in the lives of the affected with the main message being that what is rare, is truly beautiful.

P.S. A huge thanks to all the volunteers, my classmates and juniors to make it a day that changed the lives of 24 kids and their family, giving them hope and happiness.
